POTEET ISD NAMES NEW SUPERINTENDENT
At the Poteet ISD School Board Meeting on October 6, 2009, Andres Castillo was named as the new Superintendent for Poteet ISD.

POTEET FFA HEADED TO STATE COMPETITION
The Poteet FFA traveled to the Welder Refuge in Sinton, Texas on October 7, 2009 to compete in the Area X FFA CDE for Land, Range and Plant ID. The Chapter Plant ID team placed 4th overall out of 21 teams qualifying them for State Competiion which will be held in Lubbock in April. Team members were Shawnie Wagner, placing 6th out of 75 contestants, Sandon Uribe, Stephanie Rivera, and Patrick Reyes. The Chapter Range Team placed 2nd overall out of 8 teams qualifying for State which will be held at Stephenville in April. Team members were Courtney Criswell placing 5th, Emily Akers placing 7th, Janelle Perez placing 8th, Kayla Wilkins placing 10th out of 28 contestants. Congratulations and good luck at State Contest.

NOVEL INFLUENZA (H1N1) AND SEASONAL INFLUENZA GUIDELINES
1. Teach, monitor, encourage and enforce "covering your cough" and frequent hand-washing with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer in home, school, clinic and community settings.
2. In schools, students and staff who appear to have an influenza-like illness at arrival or who become ill during the day should be sent home.
3. To minimize further spread of disease and to increase the chance of full recovery, persons with flu-like symptoms (fever of 100 degrees or higher with a cough or sore throat) should stay home from school or work for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone (the fever must be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.
4. Not all patients with suspected novel influenza (H1N1) infection or seasonal influenza infection need to be seen by a health care provider. Most persons recover fully without anti-viral medicines. Patients with severe illness and those at high risk for complications from influenza should contact their medical provider or seek medical care.
5. Not all people with suspected novel influenza (H1N1) infection need to have the diagnosis confirmed, especially if the illness is mild. Confirmatory testing is recommended for high risk individuals, hospitalized patients and persons with a typical presentation of illness.
6. Absences will be excused with a note stating your child has flu-like symptoms. A physician's note will still be required if the child is out for 5 days or more.

MARVELOUS MONDAYS
Poteet ISD will have 10 days of special instruction time called "Marvelous Mondays". These days will be holidays for some students, and fun-filled instruction time for others. Students and parents will be notified if your attendance is required. These days will count as absences if you are required to participate but do not attend.
Please look for more information regarding Marvelous Mondays. Our first day will be October 26th additional information will be sent home with your child.

STUDENT EXPRESSION OF RELIGIOUS VIEWPOINTS
The District shall treat a student's voluntary expression of a religious viewpoint, if any, on an otherwise permissible subject in the same manner the District treats a student's voluntary expression of a secular or other viewpoint on an otherwise permissible subject and shall not discriminate against the student based on a religious viewpoint expressed by the student on a otherwise permissible subject.
The Campus creates a limited public forum for student speakers at all school events at which a student is to publicly speak.
Introductory Speakers
Student speakers shall be given a limited public forum to introduce:
1. Campus Sporting Events; 2. Pep Rallies; 3. Award Ceremonies; and
4. Other school events as designated by the campus prinipcal subject to the approval of the District Superintendent.
Eligibility and Selection
Students are eligible to be selected to introduce school events covered by this policy if they:
1. Are in the highest two grade levels of the school. 2. Volunteer to speak, and
3. Are not in a disciplinary placement of suspension from any extra-curriculuar activity at the time of the speaking event.
Eligible students who wish to volunteer shall submit their names tot he campus principal by September 10, 2009.
The names of the students who volunteer to speak shall be randomly drawn until all names have been selected; the names shall be listed in the order drawn. Students will be notified if selected.

Poteet ISD adopted a tax rate that will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year's tax rate. The tax rate will effectively be raised by .56 percent and will raise taxes for the maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $6.50.
