Greetings from your principal—Mr. Van Johnson

Welcome back Aggies and Agates!  It is hard to believe that another school year is upon us.  It is my honor to serve you as your principal for this 2012-2013 academic year.  I had a great year this past year in Poteet and want to thank you for your warm and gracious reception.  While we did accomplish many of our goals this past year, we will need to work hard to meet the new challenges and expectations ahead of us.   It is a joy to work with a supportive community of parents, students, and staff.

Our theme this year will be:  “Poteet’s Got Talent- 100 years of excellence”. As part of this we will showcase our many talented staff members and students throughout the school year.   We will continue to establish and maintain a campus culture that sets and expects high expectations from everyone, promotes continuous learning of all, and provides intellectual stimulation for its students and staff alike.  My goal will be to continue to work with all staff to foster a positive school climate where everyone’s ideas are respected and people are treated with dignity.

We will continue with our 21st Century after school program, which provides tutorials and other after school activities for students;  and with our TTIPS grant program, which helps provide funding to improve academic performance, teacher quality, and school climate. Laptops, Netbooks, and iPads will be available for all teachers to check out and use with students through our technology room.  We will also be continuing our Positive Behavior Support Initiative with its “Aggie Pride” theme as well.  Teachers will be using the state C-scope curriculum to prepare our students as 21st century learners.  Students in 11th and 12th grades will continue to take the TAKS test and will be required to pass this exit level test in order to graduate.  Students in 9th and 10th grades will be taking the STAAR End of Course exams this year and must pass them in all 4 core areas each year in order to graduate.  Opportunities to re-test in each core area will be held throughout the school year.  We will continue to offer pre-scribed tutorials in our Aggie Time advisory period which will be 9th period this year.

It will take everyone’s cooperation, assistance, and teamwork to make our Aggies #1.  I am confident that the community of Poteet is ready to take on this challenge.  I look forward to another great year and would like to welcome the many new staff members that will be joining us.  Please feel free to stop by or call the high school with any concerns or questions that you may have.  My job is to advocate for what is best for our students.  Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Van C. Johnson
